For breastfed babies:
- Express a few tablespoons of breastmilk (either by hand or pump) into a small, sterilised container.
- Add 4 drops of Colief Infant Drops.
- You can give this to your baby in either a syringe, a bottle, a cup or spoon before initiating breastfeeding. You can then breastfeed as normal.
For babies who are fed formula:
- Prepare the formula carefully as per the manufacturer’s instructions or if you are using ready to feed formula then warm the milk.
- Add 4 drops of Colief Infant Drops to the warm formula.
- Gently mix together.
- You can feed this to your baby after half an hour and discard any unused feed within 2 hours of preparing.
The gold standard of making up feeds is to make up one at a time per feed to lower the chances of tummy bugs for babies. If you need to make bottles of formula up in advance, then you can check out the NHS advice about making up bottles in advance. In this case only 2 drops of Colief Infant Drops need to be added to the bottles.
Colief Infant Drops can be used at every feed until your baby is 3-4 months old. At this stage it is a good idea to gradually reduce the amount of Colief Infant Drops by first halving the number of drops used in each feed and then use in alternate feeds – so use one bottle with Colief Infant Drops added, one bottle without, finally reducing to once a day until Colief is no longer required. If the symptoms return then revert to the previous dosage level.
Because Colief Infant Drops contains an enzyme it is important not to add to hot milk as the enzyme is destroyed by heat. Colief works best in warm milk (body temperature). No more than 64 drops should be given in any 24-hour period
